GHANA GLASS BEADS

RECYCLED GLASS OF GHANA

In the small tropical village of Agomenya, in Ghana, a new type of glass is being created by the Krobo Tribe, long famous for their powdered glass beads. The new technique produces a semi-transparent glass bead, reminiscent of found beach glass. The artists use broken bottles, colored glass plates and window glass for this recycled product. The glass is broken into small pieces and placed in handmade ceramic molds, and then fired in a wood fired kiln, removed to make holes for the beads, and fired again. They are then slowly cooled, cleaned and strung for the world marketplace. A young Krobo named Cedi has initiated the production of this beautifully colored transparent "Bodom" glass.
