We are located in the Village of Salem in upstate New York near the Vermont border.
Going North on Rte. 22 turn right (East) at the traffic light in Salem and go approximately three quarters of a mile on Route 153/ East Broadway. Look for our blue mail box and sign on the left just past the Salem Rescue Squad. Follow the lane to the gardens.
We are about 200 miles from New York City, Boston and Montreal. Call or e-mail us if you need more information about the best route.
ABOUT OUR GARDENS
We grow over 600 varieties of northern hardy (zone 4) registered daylilies. Our plants are field grown using organic methods and we are licensed and inspected by the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets.
We offer hardy daylilies in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes - all registered by the American Hemerocallis Society. Please refer to the following key of abbreviations that we use in our daylily descriptions:
DAYLILY NAME (hybridizer & year) height; bloom season = early, mid, or late; bloom size; foliage type = dormant, semi-evergreen,or evergreen; T = tetraploid; description & awards; price.
During the daylily season we also have thousands of seedlings in bloom from our hybridizing program. We are working to produce beautiful colors and forms in plants that are also northern hardy.
ABOUT DAYLILIES
Daylilies have been called the "perfect perennial" because of their beauty, versatility, hardiness, and tolerance for a wide range of growing conditions. Each flower on a daylily scape (stalk) blooms for only one day, but each scape has many blooms and each mature plant has many scapes so that plants may flower for several weeks - every day producing fresh, new flowers.
They like a sunny location with 5 hours to a full day’s sun. More sun is better than less. They will grow in shade but may not bloom well. Daylilies should be planted in well-drained garden soil about 1 1/2 to 2 feet apart. Adding compost to enrich the soil will improve growth.
Daylilies will thrive when given consistent, thorough watering during the growing season. An inch of natural rainfall per week is good and supplemental watering will produce superior blooms. Daylilies will survive under many harsh conditions and are famous for being high performance and low maintenance.
We recommend planting at least 6 weeks prior to the first frost. If planted in early spring they should send up one or two scapes by mid summer. Once established, most daylilies will form a fine clump and may not have to be divided for many years.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
Our field-grown daylilies are shipped bare-root with the foliage trimmed. Planting instructions are included with every order.
To plant your daylilies, dig a generous hole about 1 foot wide and about 8 inches deep. Make a big, firm mound in the bottom of the hole (you don’t want the plant to sink after it settles). Set the plant on top of the mound, draping the roots over it. The "crown" of the plant (where the leaves meet the roots) should be no more than 1 inch below the surface. Fill in the hole being careful to tamp out air holes. Water thoroughly.
